Visuals Matter! Designing
and Using Effective Visual
Representations to Support
Project and Portfolio Decisions
Despite the
vital role visuals
play in modern
life, very little
research has
been done to
examine just
how they work
and how they influence our actions
and decisions. In this report, the
result of a two-year research project
funded by PMI and University Col-
lege London, the authors explore the
impact of visuals on cognition and
communication in project portfolio
decisions. Their goal is to increase
project practitioners’ and scholars’
awareness about how important visu-
als can be and to provide guidance on
how visuals can be used and designed
to enhance business.

Culture and Project Management:
Managing Diversity in
Multicultural Projects
This text explores
the cultural impact
on projects and their
management, provid-
ing readers with an
understanding of the
main elements of
cross-cultural theory
within the project context. These include
the perception of context, achievement,
power and group dynamics, and the
approach to ambiguity and time. The
author identifies key aspects of project
management where cultural sensitivity
is essential—for example, planning, risk
management, project communication
and leadership—and offers a structured
plan for developing what he calls “cultural
tuning” within a project environment.
He offers project managers a new and
extraordinarily rich perspective into the
likely dynamics of their projects.

Requirements Management: A Practice Guide
Organizations continue to experience project issues associated with poor performance on require-ments-related activities. This guide provides project managers, program managers, team members
and stakeholders with the tools they need to excel in requirements development and management.
It provides a practical discussion of requirements work, defines what is the work of requirements
(the tasks, knowledge and skills), discusses why the work is important and provides a description of
the activities performed. Developed by leading experts in the field and applicable to most programs
and projects, the concepts and techniques in this practice guide can be used to develop solutions
that meet expectations, improve performance, deliver benefits and achieve outcomes.
